Excellent! We have been coming to this show for 30 years, we think the changes you made were good. We liked that the dealers were compressed, we liked the mist tent and we liked being able to get a beer with lunch! Change is good - we hope it went well for you!

BATTLE OF NEWTOWN REVOLUTIONARY WAR EVENT

SORRY TRAVEL CANCELLED DUE TO HURRICANE IRENE SAFETY FOR LADY ELLEN
Newtown Battlefield State Park sits high on a forested hilltop with a commanding view of the Chemung River Valley below. It is located in the beautiful Southern Tier area of New York State, near Elmira. Full of pristine, quiet, natural beauty, and rich with history going back hundreds of years, the park is an excellent location for anyone searching for any of these things.
In 1779, General George Washington ordered General John Sullivan to gather an army and form an offensive against the Iroquois Nations and their allies. Because of repeated attacks against the white settlers, his orders were to drive the Indians out of the wilderness of New York, to burn their villages and destroy their crops so they could not return. The army was to push its way northward to the shores of Lake Ontario and to capture the British Forts Oswego and Niagara. As the army of about 5,000 soldiers pushed northward from Pennsylvania, they came to this hill and here, on August 29, 1779, near an Indian Village called New Town, they engaged in a battle.

The weekend was created as a means to give a warm thank you to the entire reenacting community as well as provide an opportunity for reenactors and other historical interpreters to get an early start on ordering new uniforms or period dress, refilling supplies, catching up with friends, learning about history and having a great time while doing it. It is a weekend of period dances, lively discussions, workshops, seminars, and shopping with a ladies tea and a gentleman’s cigar and brandy social for both reenactors and the general public thrown in for good measure.
We have an entire community of reenactors who live and breathe history every day. Each era of history, from the Revolutionary War to the present, is represented somewhere at some time by a reenactor who has something to say and teach us all. Through their knowledge of history and their dedication to the historic portrayal of those who lived during each time period we have a means of experiencing times long past.

The Burning of Kingston
On October 16, 1777, during the British campaigne to control the North (Hudson) River & effectively split the New England Colonies/States from the South, a fleet of 23 ships & 2000 troops were sent North to rondezvous & support General Burgoyne's push South from the Champlain Valley to Albany. After Gentleman Johnny's defeat at Saratoga, the support fleet under General Vaughn stopped at Kingston, then capitol of New York, to punish this "nest of villians" & the badly outnumbered Militia had no choice but to flee as
the Brittish troops burned every building but one in the time allowed them.
Every two years The First Ulster Milita, in cooperation with the City of Kingston, commemorates this event with a major weekend reenactment. Begining Friday evening with a Committee of Safety Meeting, traditionally held at a present day tavern in one of the original stone houses that was burned in the attack, the event moves to the landing of the Birtish troops the next morning & the attack on the Historic Stockade District. Last year (2007) drew one of the largest collection of 18th century wooden boats of any in the Northeast & on Sunday we were able to recreate the persuit of the gunboat galley "Lady Washington" on the Rondout Creek by members of the British fleet with our new vessel, Pettiauger "Mercury", portraying "Lady Washington".
The next Burning of Kingston Reenactment is now official. It is planned to coincide with the Quadricentenial of Henry Hudson's discovery & exploration of the Hudson in 1609.
